Sean Alonzo
Based in Metro Manila, Sean graduated from St. Benilde and moved into blade design and forging as a passion project over COVID. Initially wanting to see how far he could push his ability to combine sleek forms, functionality, and materials rarely used in the industry, Sean's knives were so well-received globally that he decided to expand. Now, he focuses on not just design, but forging experiences unattainable elsewhere in the world for patrons, creating blades and stories that fully represent what it means to be a true artisan.
The Etymology of Balete Blades
Named after the balete tree, for its significance as a sacred threshold between the worlds of the living and the spiritual, the forge wants to pay homage to one of the most longstanding icons of Filipino mythology and culture. Balete Blades walks the threshold between what is so often seen as a simple, everyday tool, and the beauty and heirloom potential of something truly worth passing down to future generations. This gentle tension translates across to the unique combinations of rare materials and steels used and specially-treated to give even the simplest actions a level of luxury otherwise unattainable.
Handmade, One-of-one
Unlike most makers who use lucite and simple steels, Sean sources for ethically-procured and unique materials all across Philippines and the world, ranging from gemstones to horn. Due to their natural, organic patterning, no piece is the same as any other. Not just for display either, he hand-treats each piece, ensuring it can be used for its purpose.
